On the blog: Plans for second summer of carving

March 7, 2014
by Anna Huntington, community arts coordinator for The Sculpture Project

We visited with Masayuki Nagase by Skype recently from his home in Berkeley. Yuki has been busy this winter working on hand-carved benches and pavers for San Francisco General Hospital's roof garden and a river reclamation project outside of Philadelphia. Yuki is looking forward to returning to Rapid City in late June and gave us some updates on his plans for Passage of Wind and Water this summer.

  • The sculptor showed us his plaster models for the last three stones in the Badlands Tapestry Garden along Main Street. We'll post photos when he has carved them
  • Yuki will begin carving at Main Street Square in early July and a fun kickoff event is planned at the Square July 6, 2 to 4 p.m.  Yuki’s friend, Tadao Arimoto, a Pittsburgh-based wood artist, will hold a “Balancer Workshop” as part of the celebration.
  • Yuki plans to work most weekdays through October, and will hold informal artist talks at Main Street Square most Thursdays at noon.
  • Martin Rickert, Yuki's assistant last year, will not be in Rapid City this summer. But, Yuki will have assistance from Rausch Granite
